An ageing 2 000 sq ft Spanish bungalow was re-imagined into a light, family-friendly retreat — blending original stucco charm with new indoor-outdoor flow and a resort-style pool.
We extended the footprint with a vaulted great-room wing, inserted steel French doors and laid reclaimed hex-tile floors that carry out to the patio. A marble-clad chef’s kitchen anchors the open plan, while exposed ceiling beams, arched windows and hand-trowelled plaster preserve period character. Outside, cedar carriage doors, wrought-iron gates and a terracotta motor court set a warm first impression.
Unique touches — a black-shiplap powder room with brass fittings, patterned risers on the garage stair and clerestory windows above the island — add personality without clutter. Energy-efficient glazing, new mechanicals and drought-tolerant landscaping boost performance, and the kidney-shaped pool is framed by low stucco planters for privacy. The result feels both intimate and spacious, proving thoughtful design can modernise heritage homes without losing their soul.
